Meet the panelists

Gavin Ghia Mattu
Director, Warmonger Training Academy
Master of Science (Project Management), class of 2018
Gavin is of Kelabit and Australian parentage and graduated with a commerce degree in property valuation from Curtin University, Perth in 2007. After graduation, Gavin worked as a franchise manager for Luxotica International for a few years before beginning his career as an assistant property manager with Gow Real Estate. He went on to become a property manager and sales representative before going to work with the LMW Hegney Property Group as a property valuer. After working in the property industry for close to 10 years, Gavin returned to Miri to complete his Master of Science in Project Management at Curtin Malaysia, during which he and his business partners opened the Warmonger Training Academy, Miri’s first competitive combat sports training centre.
Rining Mutang Tagal
Director, Semaring Enterprise Sdn. Bhd. 
Bachelor of Commerce (Management & Marketing), class of 2008
Rining, who has a Lun Bawang and Chinese background, graduated from Curtin University in Perth campus in 2008 with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Marketing and Management. He then pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA International) majoring in Marketing at Edith Cowan University in Perth. After graduating, Rining’s first business venture was opening a fine dining restaurant in Melbourne with a few partners. In 2012, he founded an events company, Music Mansion. Over the next few years, Rining and his group invited many famous international artistes and deejays to perform in nightclubs and events in Perth, Bali and Miri. Miri was thus put on the international map and global entertainment and nightlife scene. After a few years of events organising, Rining joined his family’s construction and oil & gas company, Semaring Group of Companies. Currently he’s the director and head of human resource in the organisation.



Serena May Robinson
University Life Officer, Curtin Malaysia
Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication), class of 2011
Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary), class of 2016
Serena, who is of Bidayuh and Iban parentage, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Curtin University in Perth in 2011, majoring in Film & Television and Journalism. After graduating, she went on to work as a temporary Marketing Relations Officer with the International Office Department at the Perth campus before beginning her career as a Student Mobility Coordinator in the Student Mobility Department. Her biggest role in that job was coordinating the ‘Science without Borders’ Program for a group of Brazilian mobility students sponsored by the Brazilian government. In 2014, Serena continued with her postgraduate studies, undertaking the Graduate Diploma of Education course for secondary school students, majoring in Media and minoring in English before graduating in 2016. After living in Australia for 7 years, Serena finally returned to Miri in 2017 and began working with Curtin Malaysia as a Marketing Officer for 2 years before being appointed to her current role as Curtin Malaysia’s University Life Officer.
